Years 3 and 4

Orienteering (AT2)

As an introduction to orienteering, the children looked closely at an aerial view of our school, on the photograph they labelled the different areas they could identify on the school grounds. After they had studied the aerial view closely, they drew their own detailed maps of the school grounds and created their own keys to identify the different places located on their maps.

As part of their geography and orienteering, the Year 3 and 4 children went outside to look at the human and physical features within our school grounds. They also used our map of the school grounds to familiarise themselves with the features on the orienteering maps.

The children in Year 3 and 4 learnt all about the compass points to aid them with their orienteering. They developed their learning of the four compass points from KS1 to being able to identify the eight points of a compass.

The Year 3 and 4 children completed our short orienteering courses using a compass to help them use their maps correctly.

World Locational Knowledge (AT1)

The Year 3 and 4 classes will be improving upon their locational knowledge of the world this term.

Firstly, the children will be recapping their knowledge of the continents and oceans. Next, the children will be expanding their geographical understanding by looking at; latitude, longitude, The Equator and the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

This page will be updated soon with their learning. :-)

Year 3 and 4 used atlases to recap their knowledge of the continents and oceans.
