Intent Implementation and Impact
Computing Intent, Implementation and Impact policy
Intent
At Padiham Primary school we understand the huge value that technology plays not only in supporting the computing and whole school curriculum but overall in the day-to-day life of our school. Our aims are to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum for Computing whilst also providing children with the knowledge and skills required to thrive in a rapidly changing technological world. Our high-quality computing curriculum will cover computer science (Programming and understand how digital systems work), information technology (using computer systems to store, retrieve and send information) and digital literacy (evaluating digital content and using technology safely and respectfully). These strands of learning are revisited repeatedly through a range of themes during the children’s time in school to ensure a clear progression of skills from Reception to Year 6. Our intention is that Computing also supports pupil’s creativity and cross curricular learning to enrich their experiences in school. As educators we provide all pupils with positive online computing opportunities. Online safety is a fundamental part of our schools safeguarding and child protection measures. We introduce our pupils to the online world and teach them the skills to ensure they know and understand the dangers of the online world. We are committed to protecting out pupils online and have implemented the scheme, National Online Safety into school. Every year, all our pupils will learn about self-image and identity, online relationships, online reputations, online bullying, managing online information, health, wellbeing and lifestyle, privacy and security and copyright and ownership. Using National Online Safety ensures teaching and learning is consistent across school and that all children are equipped with the skills to act safely online. In school we foster an open environment in which pupils can ask questions and engage in conversations about their online experiences. Online safety modules are also included within our PSHE scheme of leaning which covers both school and home use.
Implementation
Our whole curriculum is shaped by our school vision which aims to enable all children, regardless of background, ability or additional needs, to strive to become the very best version of themselves. Our planning follows the Lancashire Themed Scheme with elements of Purple Mash which ensures that each year group covers all aspects of the National Curriculum. Our planning is designed to show clear skills progression and cross curricular links which means children are building on their learning year after year. Each term, staff, will deliver a fun and engaging computing theme which covers the 3 strands of computing; information technology, computer science and digital literacy. Please see our computing curriculum overview for a full outline of our broad curriculum from Reception to Year 6. At Padiham Primary School we believe children should be using computers from an early age to be able to navigate technology in our ever-changing digital world. To deliver our stimulating computing curriculum, each class has their own set of laptops to ensure more opportunities for computing lessons, cross curricular learning and the teaching of specific computing skills. This allows us to show pupils that technology goes beyond just computing lessons. We strive to keep children safe online and ensure key online safety messages are embedded within computing lessons and wider school life. By using National Online Safety, all of our children will cover the 8 stands of learning as listed above every year. This means children will recap prior knowledge, build on their skills and have reduced gaps in their learning. At Padiham Primary School online safety goes beyond the classroom and we take part in Online Safety day each year. We work alongside parents to share up to date information regarding keeping children safe online. Our parents have unlimited access to National Online Safety where they can acquire guidance and support and update their own online Safety knowledge. As a school we can track parental engagement and use this to build upon our parental relationships.
Impact
Computing plays a huge part in ensuing the curriculum our school delivers to our children in engaging and current. Our aim is that our teaching and learning of computing, enables our pupils to continue to learn and grow in the digital world we live in, whilst being competent and safe online users. Children will have developed the knowledge, skills and understanding to help them access and use a range of technology in a safe and creative way. Our pupils will have progressed to meet the requirements of National Curriculum but to also enjoy using technology and to express themselves safely and creatively as responsible citizens. We measure the impact of our curriculum through pupil voice, work produced against the planned outcomes and staff conversations to discuss the effectiveness of our curriculum and ways to improve. Children will be able to talk enthusiastically about their work in computing as well as demonstrate a range of strategies to work safely online. Our children will understand the dangers of the online world and will continue to develop a positive online reputation.
