Yearly Topic Overview 2017-18

Above is our yearly overview of the topics we will cover in 2017-18. It does say Year 2 but this is because we do a 2 year cycle and so all year 1/2 classes are doing the same topics. We therefore make it more year 1 or 2 'friendly' depending on the class.

Homework

We are now lucky to have access to Doodle Maths, a fantastic programme that we are using as homework and extra practice in all areas of Maths! Your child should have a Log in username and password which they need to access the activities. Each time they log on and complete activities they get stars, plus bonus points for each consecutive day they log in. Try to access the site each week - the more the better!

We are still using the MyMaths programme so check this each week for a new set task -

   https://www.mymaths.co.uk/

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU CANNOT ACCESS IT - WE CAN TRY TO SORT THIS FOR YOU!

You will receive English homework/spellings to learn on a Friday also. It is a good idea to keep the sheet until Thursday so you can practice the spellings before the little test on Friday, even if the sheet has been completed at the weekend/beginning of the week.

Geography World Cup Week - Mexico

Each class picked a different country during our World Cup draw and we got Mexico! It was exciting as nobody knew anything about Mexico so we had plenty to learn!

We made Mexico flags, used the computer to copy Mexico football shirts, looked at the celebrations are and how Mexican's prepare for them, we made colourful skull pictures, cut out paper decorations, learnt about Mexico and where it was, made Mexican hats and finally tasted some Mexican food - nachos and dips!

What a busy but fun, enjoyable and very informative week!

Puppet Making in D&T

We have been making lots of different puppets as part of our D&T topic. We have made finger puppets, sock puppets, stick puppets and glove puppets.

We looked at real puppets to see how they worked and then designed our own. We made a paper template and cut it out and transferred this onto felt and cut it out. We then decorated it to look like our chosen animal!

Our Padiham's Got Talent Finalists - Well done girls!

Millie's Trust Day 2018 and The Royal Wedding!

frown

Well we have had a very exciting few days in school recently... We celebrated the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan last Friday where we had a special lunch and in class we made crowns, did colourings and drew pictures of the couple!

On Millies Trust day on Tuesday we all dressed up in pink or bright colours to raise money for this fantastic charity. We learnt that Millie's Trust delivers first aid to lots of people including parents. We watched a St John's Ambulance clip which taught us how to deal with burns, choking and calling for help. We practiced some of the skills we learnt on our friends and made a first aid booklet to take home and teach other people.

Well done frown

This week we made our own 'wind socks' as part of our geography topic relating to weather and how we can measure it around school. We worked in pairs to decorate the tube and cut strips of tissue paper. We tested them out to see which direction the wind was blowing!

Lily-Rose collected the most batteries in 1P - well done! Keep collecting everyone!

The sun has got his hat on... frown

Yippee the sun came out (even if it was only a few days!) and we definitely made the most of it!

We enjoyed a nature walk as part of our science topic, looking at plants and mini beasts in our school environment.

We also had fun playing in our outdoor area - we even pretended we were at the beach!

A Yummy, Healthy Salad!

As part of our D&T topic, we got to make a vegetable salad! We first tasted lots of different vegetables and wrote down our thoughts about the taste, texture and colour. We then got into groups and decided 5 different vegetables we would like to use in our own salads. We then had to wash and cut the salad using different methods such as graters and knives, discussing how to be safe as we do so and working in small groups.

Then, the best bit! We got to eat our salads! They were delicious!

Our topic this term is The Wind in the Willows. Click the link below to see more details.

Easter Egg Competition

Have a look at some of our Easter Egg designs - we had lots of fun making them and everyone made a super effort!

Well done to our winners Kacper and Tulisa!

Book Week & World Book Day

We were lucky to get a visit from a librarian during book week. She came and told us about her job and read us some fantastic stories.

We then enjoyed World Book Day! Everyone made a super effort with their costumes and we all had a fantastic day!

Well done to all the children, especially the winners William and Ebony who were given a book, goody bag and certificate.

SUPERTATO!!!

We began book week reading the story of 'Supertato' and 'Supertato Veggies Assemble' as our theme is Heroes and Villains. Little did we know that the next day, we were going to have some Super Veggies of our very own, locked away in a cage! sad

We realised that this was the work of the Evil Pea... and we needed to find him to release the Super Veggies! We made wanted posters and put them around school to see if anyone could help.

The next day, Supertato had come to the rescue and released the Super Veggies... but the Evil Pea was still out there!

Unfortunately, the next day, more veggies had been tied up, stuck, locked up and other horrible things! We needed to capture the Evil Pea once and for all!

After a very exciting but scary week (poor veggies!) the Evil Pea was finally captured! He has now been sent away, locked in a box so he cannot be mean to any more veggies! Phew!

We made some Supertato's of our own, wrote some fantastic wanted posters, designed our own Super Fruit and even made up our own story similar to Supertato!

Pyjama Fun Run!

Today we had fun wearing our PJ's all day! We ran 6 laps of the school which means we ran 1 MILE! We were very tired, especially Miss Pearson!!

Well done to everyone who brought in some money, came in their PJ's and ran the mile frown

Our Super Space Buggys!

Our curriculum plan for the Spring term.....

Welcome Back!

We hope you had a super Christmas and are ready to come back to school to learn all about 'EXPLORERS' in our next topic!

We will learn about many different explorers including Neil Armstrong who was the first man to walk on the moon!

We have so far made some lovely space pictures in art and are preparing to make vehicles in D&T - remember if you have any shoe boxes please bring them into school ASAP!

CHRISTMAS IN 1P

We had a super time getting prepared for Christmas - we made our calendar and card presents, had a fantastic party day where we played games and met Father Christmas, took part in our fantastic production of 'Lights, Camel, Action!' and did some fantastic Christmas themed work in class also.

Hope you had a super Christmas and hope 2018 continues to be a fantastic year in 1P!

Christmas has arrived at PPS!

We were lucky to have a visit from a real reindeer called Lightning! He was very nice! He let us stroke him and we learnt that reindeer drop their antlers and grow new ones which are always bigger than the last set!

Lightning is a 'reindeer in training' and is learning to fly - he is just 2 years old so will hopefully be one of Father Christmas' reindeer one day!

We have had a busy half term so far! Not only have we been learning through our topic 'Fighting Fit', we have started our Christmas preparations!

In art we have been looking at the human body and movement, drawing stick figures in different positions and making a person (we made an Elf to make it more festive) out of clay. We moulded the clay and used our fingers and tools to shape and add detail to it. We are very pleased with our little Elves and will be bringing them home for Christmas!

We also have our pantomime to look forward to this Thursday and our Nativity 'Lights Camel Action' begins next week!

Children in Need 2017

We had a lovely day on Friday for Children in Need Day! We wore our own clothes, had a colouring competition, ate a yummy biscuit and most importantly raised lots of money for a fantastic cause!

Well done to everyone who brought money in - you know your donations will help lots of children less fortunate than us.

Have a look at some pictures below...

(There are also a few pictures from our Cinema trip to watch Zootropolis which we really enjoyed! The children were super well behaved - well done!)

POPPY DAY 2017

We made some beautiful poppy paintings on Friday using just our fingers! We also copied a lovely acrostic poem spelling either the words 'poppy' or 'remember' - our handwriting had to be super neat!

We discussed why we wear poppies, why we have two minutes silence and also why it is the poppy that is the chosen symbol for remembrance. We also took part in a two minutes silence where we thought about what we had learnt.

Happy Halloween!

What a fantastic effort you all made today for our Book Week fancy dress day!

I was so impressed (and a little bit scared!) looking at all of your outfits - you looked great!

We had witches, skeletons, vampires, wizards and mummies to name just a few - and rather a lot of face paint and blood! sad

We have been having lots of fun in our new outdoor area! Have a look at some photos of us enjoying the climbing frame, sandpit and construction areas!

Gawthorpe Hall Walk

Yesterday we had a lovely walk to Gawthorpe Hall. We looked at the building and sat and drew it, trying to add lots of detail. We then got to look around the grounds and play in the maze!

Have a look at some photos of the walk and our super art work!

We had a lovely day dressed as book characters and wearing Roald Dahl's favourite colour yellow! Take a look at our fantastic outfits...

smiley Welcome to 1P! smiley

Hello and welcome to Year 1!

I am sure that we will have a fantastic year and you will learn lots and have lots of fun!

Joining me in 1P is Mrs Davidson who will be in class all day Monday-Thursday. Miss Fort is helping us all day Monday and teaching on Thursday afternoons (Wednesday morning from November) and Mrs Hope will be with us each morning until 10.30. We are also very lucky to have a college student two days a week until Christmas!  We have so many teachers to help us!!

The 'curriculum cloud' details what we will be learning in each subject this term. Our topic is 'The Place Where We Live.' Keep an eye on this page for more information and photos of what we are doing in our new class...

Things to know...

End of the day arrangements - Pick up your child from the top of the first set of steps - I will stand at the wooden gate and let the children out when I see a grown up.

PE is Tuesday afternoon - Please ensure that ALL KIT is NAMED. Earrings need to be removed on Tuesdays as children cannot do PE with earrings in.

Reading Books - will be changed as often as we can (at least 3 times per week) so please send book bags in each day, whether they have read the book or not, as I read in school with the children also. Children will read with teaching assistants each week but this may not be written in their records as we now have in school ones.

Homework - will be given out on a Friday. Please encourage the children to do the sheet as independently as possible and learn the spellings on the sheet. Please return the sheet by the following Thursday and we will do a little test to check what they have learnt. We also get Maths homework which is done online - information on this will be given out soon.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE DON'T HESITATE TO ASK A MEMBER OF STAFF.
